Linsifarne- Holy Island (Weekend Trip 2)

Despite the many sold out or canceled trips, I managed to get a ticket to Holy Island in England with the International Student Center. I love going to England for the day...
All 100 or so of us crowded onto two huge buses and headed south. My favorite part of these buses is that everyone is speaking a different language. I, of course, don't understand any but my own, but am generally inspired to learn one when I get home. I can't decide between Spanish or Italian...
The cool thing about Holy Island is that it has a land bridge- part of the time. When the tide is down you simply drive your car the mile or two to the island, end of story. When the tide is up, however, you are stuck on one side or the other. These are the signs littering the island:
Our first destination of the morning was Berwick because we had to wait for the tide to go out before we could head to the island. We stayed there for about an hour and half just exploring. We joked that we could have stayed all day it was pretty. Just to warn you- a lot of pictures are coming up. There aren't many activities to do on an island of 160 inhabitants... so we hiked... and we took pictures... and I'm in love with so many, so you are getting too many...
This is the little fishing town of Berwick.
Julia is completely incapable of keeping her eyes open for pictures. We took about 3 and gave up. Here we are in front of the bridge that reminds her of home.

After we had our fill of the sea we walked...
And we came across... well, it's called the Lowry Estate, but I rather like referring to it as Peter Rabbit's Garden, because seriously... if you were Peter Rabbit, wouldn't you live here?
Yeah, that's what I thought.

We had a hurried walk back to the city center and got back on the bus. We had another half hour ride to the island.
This is crossing the "land-bridge." You can see the "road" in the left hand corner...

Our first stop on the island was naturally the ocean.

After that we had a nice meander through the plains

And some time in sheep country... okay, let's be honest, the whole island was sheep country... I'll try to keep my pictures to a minimum here. But they're so cute!
Next a small hike up to the castle...

The quaint village of Holy Island... AND...
The Lindisfarne Castle.

After a small hike, we ended up at the ocean again. Funny thing about islands...

This might have made my day:

Bahahaha...
I desperately wanted to chase him, but I remember how much trouble Jeremy and I used to get in for chasing the seagulls, so I restrained myself.

Next we came across a strange building...
Which we decided to enter.
Alex: "What if there's a ferocious beast inside?" Slides door open.
Francesca: Talking in loud voice.
Birds: Immediately fly away.
Bird Watchers: Turn and give angry looks. "So guys, do you think it's time to move to the next place?"
Not a mysterious building, a bird watching shack. Obviously.
After we had allowed for enough distance between us and the angry bird watchers, we set off... to another beach!

And hiked to the beach.
I was so excited to "swim" in the ocean in my wellies and made a big scene only to discover that my wellies have a rip in the ankle and continued the day with wet feet.
Francesca.

It was a very muddy walk back to the priory.
The Priory of Holy Island.

Next weekend I'll be in the highlands so look for new posts next week!
